Fort of the Chaberton

The tallest imposing fortress in the Alps

At 3,130 meters on the summit of Mount Chaberton you can appreciate the remains of what was once the highest fortification in Europe, the Chaberton Battery. The eight towers on which the revolving cannons rested are still clearly visible. The other premises are now in ruins and occupied by ice. The construction of the fort had a considerable strategic importance at the time of the two world wars; it began in 1898, lasted for over twenty years and was partially destroyed in 1940. Today, the Fort is located in French territory and is a destination for hikers and mountain enthusiasts.
