SAN GERVASIO GORGE

One of the sea-born mountains offering a natural landscape of rare beauty

THE VOICE OF THE PEAKS

An ideal summer outing for families with children

The San Gervasio Gorge lies on the border between Cesana and Claviere in a natural landscape of rare beauty.

The uniqueness of its rocks transpires above all from evidence of a marine environment, characterised above all by calcareous-dolomitic components, which still today contain ancient marine fossils like corals and oyster shells.

The landscape is due to the erosion modelling of landslides and glaciers over hundreds of thousands of years. After the glaciers retreated, the Piccola Dora stream gave rise to the Montgenèvre Pass.

To be more specific, the Gorge is located exactly at the point where the valley of the Piccola Dora narrows between the slopes of Segnalonga and Chaberton.

Together with the Chenaillet Massif, the Monti della Luna and Mount Chaberton, the San Gervasio Gorge is part of the Monti nati dal mare, a project to protect and enhance the area of the Upper Susa Valley.
